Inspection Summary

About This Checklist

This checklist follows FMCSA pre-trip inspection requirements under 49 CFR 396.13. Commercial drivers must inspect their vehicle before each trip and document any defects. Items marked as defects on the previous DVIR must be verified as repaired before operating.

FMCSA Requirement

Pre-trip inspections are federally mandated. Failure to perform one is a violation that can result in fines and CSA points on your Vehicle Maintenance BASIC.

Insurance Impact

Tire, brake, and light violations are the most common DOT inspection findings. Regular pre-trips catch these before they become violations — keeping your CSA clean and your premiums lower.

Time Investment

A thorough pre-trip takes 10–15 minutes. That's a small investment compared to the cost of a roadside violation ($500–$2,000+), an out-of-service order, or an accident caused by a preventable mechanical failure.

Keep Your Record Clean, Keep Your Rates Low

A clean maintenance record means lower insurance premiums. Talk to an agent who understands how your safety habits translate to savings.
